How many kids actually cook these days? Our busy, structured activity- filled lifestyles often leave no time to learn this art. Learning to cook has numerous benefits for both the child and others who are involved but the time involved in preparing, cooking and cleaning when a child is involved is often seen as a hindrance. It can be easier to leave the little ones out and do it quickly and efficiently. But the benefits when cooking with kids are many. Let us look at some of these.
Cooking is fun! Time spent with the child is rewarding and allows time for chat. It is great family time!
Cooking introduces children to fresh, healthy ingredients. Children learn about different food groups, a balanced diet and are exposed to new foods. They are more likely to eat the food they have made themselves and this life- skill will hopefully discourage them from eating ready- made processed foods in the future.
Children have a sense of purpose. They make the food and they are the chef. Children gain self-confidence and are proud of the final meal. They learn about the work involved in cooking a meal.
Cooking is math, chemistry and reading in action. They weigh ingredients for a cake and need to time their cooking. They learn how yeast makes dough rise. They follow recipes. Cooking allows them to learn practically.
Cooking helps with fine motor skills. Children need to mix and roll dough and cut vegetables. They are likely to need lots of help with these tasks initially but practice will make perfect.
Children learn about safety in the kitchen. It is essential that teaching about safety in the kitchen is a priority. This should before done they start cooking and all children always need to be supervised, especially younger ones. Basic kitchen rules should be explained –no metal in microwaves, no plastic in the oven, wash hands before cooking and how to deal with raw meat. A young child may need a kitchen tour and fire safety explanation is paramount.
