Kids are constantly on the go! A hectic schedule of school, extracurricular activities and video games seems to be the norm but what about the down time?? Children nowadays live in a much more competitive environment than those of yester-year and although we often think children cope very well, they too can get stressed.
The benefit of yoga in adults is well known and its popularity is continuing to grow in the West. A bit of time out to relax and stretch into different poses makes people feel physically better and improves emotional wellbeing. Children too can reap these things. The breathing techniques learnt can be relaxing before an exam. It helps build concentration and improves flexibility and muscle tone.
There are a few venues in Cardiff that offer yoga classes for kids including Sakura, Cardiff Yoga Studio and Penarth Yoga Studio. As popularity increases I hope more places will offer yoga for the young.
Schools recognise the benefits of this self- awareness and now ‘mindfulness’ is being promoted across the country. There is evidence that it helps manage stress and improve academic grades. Mindfulness Workshops encourage you to be more aware of the now. This informal method of yoga encourages the appreciation of feelings and sensations as experiences happen, and trains people to respond to them with tools like breathing and counting. It teaches self regulation and self understanding so helping a person to remain calm. Mental health issues in children continue to be a top priority with ongoing challenges such as bullying, exams and competitions.
So if a child can learn to listen to their feelings as they happen and adopt coping strategies as they go along, it must be a good thing. Why not give it a try??
